What Jeannie Fulbright, Apologia's Elementary Science Series says: "A Child's Geography is exactly what the homeschooling world has been needing to teach geography, using a living book approach that draws in children... I highly recommend this for geography."

"A Child's Geography really IS the best geography guidebook I've seen for the K-6th grade set.  (And I've seen a lot over 10 years of homeschooling!)"
~Holly Johnson, homeschooling mother of 7

"I am always looking for truly excellent, Christ-centered materials.  I appreciate the niche you are filling as I have had a hard time finding a Christian, living-book, geography "text" to use!"
~Carrie Austin www.heartofdakota.com  ~A Cathy Duffy Top 100 Pick

"This is exactly what I have been looking for.  I have tried [two other geography curriculums] but honestly, neither works well with our living book studies.  I find them hard to navigate and the children find them dry.  I think A Child's Geography is wonderful ."
~Cindy McCarthy,  homeschooling mother of 9

How to Prepare for your Own Tour of the World!

World Tour.jpg ~Recruit several other curious, adventuresome families to join you

~Each family select a country to research and discover

~Find a venue for the World Tour. Consider a church where each family may have a Sunday School room to transform into their country of choice.

~ Offer ideas to each family to participate in the Tour of the World: Get creative! How can you make a small room like landing in that country!?

To create a room that looks like one is entering that particular country:

~make the country's flag
~set appropriate textiles, tools, artifacts about the room
~products from the country of choice--scour your grocery store
~music from your country of selection -- record the music?--music really sets the tone!

Prepare to dress in the traditional dress of the country's inhabitants
~recreate traditional housing from the country in miniature

On the walls of the room:

~wall map of the country of choice to be displayed (perferably drawn by the family--map it and you'll own it!)

Create a tour of the country by displaying pictures around the walls of the room, including posters focusing on: ~archaeology ~wildlife ~geographical regions ~industry, economy ~ cuisine ~traditions, festivities ~day-in-the-life-of ~points of interest ~language ~agriculture

Include a poster board for your country tour, focusing on the experience of Christians from your country (research mission publications)

Create a travel brochure of the country, to give to parting guests

Prepare a handout on how best to pray for Christians in that country (see mission publications for direction)

Have a handout prepared that has a prayer walk drawn of the country for people to pray for the country's inhabitants and possible suggestion on how to give, support, aid the people of your selected country...

Offer a door prize (a product from the country of your selection) for anyone willing to fill out a geographical quiz that you have made up focusing on your country

So your final checklist, the day of your World Tour:

~outfits ready?
~food ready?
~house presentation prepared?

~10 poster boards ready including ~archaeology ~wildlife ~geographical regions ~industry, economy ~ cuisine ~traditions, festivities ~day in the life of ~points of interest ~language ~agriculture

~2 handouts prepared ?
~1 geography quiz ready?
~travel brochures prepared?
~music recorded? tape player ready?
~wall map prepared?
~fast facts poster board ready?
~interesting trivia board ready?
~products ready to display?

Don't forget to serve world tourists your recipe!

The night of the World Tour, families arrive, tour through rooms set up to create countries scattered around the world. Consider greeting World Tourists at the door with a world map handout. At each country stop  throughout the evening, they find the country on their world map. Let them chart their tour around the world that evening!

Bonus ideas:

~serve a potluck meal with dishes from the world over

~have each family hand out tickets with a few phrases in the language of their country. At night's end, each world tourist should have gathered a bouquet of phrases from around the world-- encourage world tourists to speak to each other in tonuges from around the world!

~during a meal, have tour guides from each country give a small presentation regarding their country--make it creative!

~each family present about a missionary serving in the country of their choice.  Conclude the evening praying for that missionary. Consider each family adopting that missionary, writing the family a letter with pictures from you World Tour evening.

~consider gathering a donation from World Tourists for World Vision....

Let's go into all the World with Christ's love!

ADD LITERATURE

You could also add to your travel brochure some titles of stories you have read about the country of study that other families can enjoy reading too.

For suggestions of stories for various age groups about South Africa (my home country) visit http://www.south-african-homeschool-curriculum.com/south-african-literature.html

And for a few more suggestions of others I have found for preschoolers take a look at my Around the World Preschool Theme page. Its still a work in progress and I'd love to receive some more titles of suggested reading. Go to http://www.shirleys-preschool-activities.com/around-the-world-preschool-theme.html
